What is a Long Term memory?

Human memory has “short term memory” and “long term memory”.

Short-term memory is like a temporary storage place for new information.

Oppositely, long term memory is a storage of information for a long period of time.


Short-term memory is forgotten as soon as time passes or new information comes in.

On the other hand, long-term memory is used when the brain memorizes information seriously.

It is, so to speak, a hard disk of the brain.

Since the capacity of long-term memory is limited, the brain sorts and only the information judged as “necessary” is sent to the cerebral cortex and stored for a long time.

It is the place called “hippocampus” of the brain that is responsible for this sorting work.


What criteria does hippocampus select for information? It is “whether it will be useful for the survival of life”. Hippocampus selects only information judged as “necessary to survive” and sends it to long-term memory.

As a person age and our brain having its set limitation, you might think that forgetting things from time to time is common.
But, when can we say that forgetfulness is still normal? How you know that this memory lapses are acceptable?

1. Absentmindedness

  • This is a usual type of forgetting and common in people who do not pay close attention on something.
    Let’s say they may be physically present, but mentally absent.

3. Blocking Memory

  • This refers to the experience in which the answer is right on the tip of your tongue — but you just can’t think of it. This tip-of-the-tongue experience maybe the most common example of blocking or temporarily cannot retrieve memory.
    Blocking doesn’t occur because you aren’t paying attention or because the memory has faded away.
    On the contrary, blocking occurs when a memory is properly stored in your brain, but something is keeping you from retrieving it.


3. Misattribution

  • Right memory, wrong source — that’s one example of misattribution.
    Misattribution occurs when a person remembers something accurately in part, but misattributed memory like some detail,
    like the time, place, or person involved.

    Another kind of misattribution occurs when someone believes a thought she had was totally original when, in fact,
    it came from something she had previously read or heard but had forgotten about.
    This sort of misattribution explains cases of unintentional plagiarism, in which a writer presents some information as original when he or she actually read it somewhere before.

3. Link information to existing knowledge

An important skill to learn which will improve memory is association. This means linking what you want to remember with something else. Imagine that by associating this memorable object to something else, that you are attaching a tag to it.

    After testing her on spelling, have her highlight and rewrite the difficult words.
    Once your child realizes that memory is an active process, she’ll feel smarter and more confident that she can tackle tricky topics.

1. Animal/Number Flashcards

  • You may use number or any kinds of animal flash card. Do a very fast showing and let your child follow. This method is good to improve photographic memory.


2. Spot the difference pictures

  • Show two different kinds of pictures. One original and other has difference. By using this, the child will practice recall and tell how the first picture differs from the other one. This is good to build visual and memory of children.
